Kawasan Canyoneering - Jumps, Slides, and the Blue Falls

What it's actually like to canyoneer from Alegria down to Kawasan Falls.

Kawasan Canyoneering - Jumps, Slides, and the Blue Falls

What canyoneering at Kawasan is

It is a guided downstream traverse of the Kanlaob River canyon, starting from the highlands above Alegria and ending at the base of Kawasan Falls in Badian. You walk, scramble, swim, and jump through a series of pools cut into pale limestone. The longest jump is around eight meters; most are between two and five. There is one mandatory cliff where the only way out is a six-meter drop. Trip length runs roughly three to four hours.

How hard is it really

Moderate. If you can swim 50 meters in open water and you are not afraid of jumping into water you cannot see the bottom of, you can do this. Local guides handhold every guest at the cliffs and there are always lower-jump alternatives - they will not push you off. Children from age 10 do it routinely with a confident adult.

What you actually need

The operator provides helmet, life vest, and a certified guide. You bring water shoes (closed-toe sandals work, flip-flops do not), a swimsuit you do not mind getting scraped against rock, and a quick-dry shirt. Leave phones and wallets at the start point - a dry bag is included for one set of car keys per group. A cheap waterproof action camera or GoPro on a wrist strap is the best souvenir.

Safety, weather, cancellation

The canyon closes for flash flood risk after heavy rain. We watch the forecast and the operator's call all morning, and if it is a no-go we refund the canyoneering portion and substitute another stop the same day - usually a longer time at the beach in Moalboal. We do not ever run the canyon in marginal conditions.

Where it sits in your trip

Canyoneering is the second half of our Day 02 - Moalboal & Badian, after the morning sardine run and turtle reef in Moalboal. By the time you finish at the bottom of Kawasan Falls and dry off it is mid-afternoon, and we are on the road back across the island to Oslob for Day 03's pre-dawn pickup.

It's the headline of Moalboal & Badian.

An early start across the island to swim through a million sardines off Panagsama Beach, drift over coral reefs with green sea turtles, then chase Kawasan's blue-water canyon down to the falls.
